Listening One of Us

Known as one of the most influential bands to emerge from the British punk scene in the late ’70s, both for their music as well as their Situationist politics, Wire has done what few of their contemporaries could manage to do: They stayed together. A little over a month ago, Wire played a very well-reviewed free show at the New York’s South Street Seaport, and their new album (called Object 47 because it’s the group’s 47th item in their catalog) is due out next week. The first single, available for download at their web site, is poppier than most of their early work, but they’ve never been afraid to experiment. While it doesn’t quite have me reaching for my copy of Das Kapital, it does have a catchy, bitter-as-ever chorus. —
