The Journey Home

Book Digest Having been published to accolades on distant shores, it took a while for Dermot Bolger’s harrowing and gritty depiction of late-century Dublin to make it to America (kudos to the University of Texas Press and its James A. Michener fiction series). Multidimensional storyteller Bolger gives us three young Dubliners trying to make it on the mean streets of the Irish capital and its panoply of progress’s depredations. Quoth fellow Irishman Colm Toibin: “It is certainly the best Irish novel never released in America, but it is also one of the best Irish novels of the past half-century.”
