Soviet, We Are Eyes, We Are Builders
It could be argued that NYC’s Soviet are part of the city’s current fascination with all things ‘80s. And that would be a gross misevaluation, given their undeniable (and proven) ability to write really good songs and perform them really well. Over the whole of the album, the crystal-clear, lyrically mature vocals take interesting—and always perfect—rhythmic and tonal choices. Arrangements on all the songs are unforgettable and diverse, juxtaposing well-chosen keyboard riffs and flourishes with simple yet agile guitar lines. Usually beautiful, always magnificent. Favorite tracks: ‘Marbleyezed,’ ‘Lonely Days,’ ‘Sensitive,’ ‘Candy Girl’
