And now a brief chat with a new Sustaining Member, Joseph M.!

Joseph, hi! You know us from the Tournament of Books, right? I started reading the ToB during its first year. I am a reader of Jason Kottke’s blog and he linked to it. I followed it that year and was rewarded with reading Cloud Atlas, which remains a favorite book. I’d love to say I’ve been loyal ever since, but the ups and downs of life (work, parenthood) means some years I’m more engaged than others. My kids (who did not exist when I discovered the ToB) are older now and I have a little more time to engage.

We're psyched to hear it. What keeps you coming back? I keep coming back because I love books, I love art criticism, and I love arbitrary artistic competitions. I was raised pop culturally on the Academy Awards, American Idol, and the style section of the Washington Post (and their movie reviews). I love how humans emotionally resonate with art and I love the ridiculousness of comparing one piece of art against another (randomly!) and bearing witness to the conversation that emerges as a result.

What led you to support today? I chose to support because it feels karmically fair. I’ve received a lot of enjoyment from the ToB and given little back. Not to virtue signal, but I donate to NPR, I contribute to Darebee (my favorite workout website), I’m a still a contributing member of Jason Kottke’s  website based on the same philosophy. I hope these answers help!  Thank you for everything you do.

It's thanks to supporters like Joseph that this indie-ass newsletter is still here. If you dig what we do, maybe today's the day you become a Sustaining Member, too?
