And now a brief chat with a new Sustaining Member, Marc F.!

Hi, Marc. Thank you so much for the support. How did you find us? I was listening to a 26 April podcast of Past Present Future, presented by David Runciman, entitled "The Novel that Unravels Democracy," in which he and Ian McEwan discuss a story [it is not a novel] by Italo Calvino entitled "The Watcher," which they call "one of the greatest of all works of political fiction." So I, as a watcher of politics, bought the book that contained that story and two others. Two of the stories, "The Watcher" and "Smog" were translated by William Weaver. On page four of "The Watcher" is the sentence, "It was 1953 now, and in all the elections in subsequent years he [the protagonist] had seen that, rain or shine, etcetera." It struck me that "subsequent" was not right so I downloaded a .pdf of the original Calvino work in Italian and translated it (four years of Latin in high school helped) and saw that something like "previous" would have been more appropriate. At that point I looked at the Wikipedia entry for William Weaver. It and especially one note helped redeem, as it were, Weaver for me. The note led to "William Weaver at Annandale-on-Hudson" by Elizabeth Kiem in The Morning News. Do you recall the last paragraph of her piece? Such lovely writing; congratulations for printing her. How could I not support you? And anyone who could provide that translation in English of "Il Pasticciaccio" can be forgiven one "subsequent."

Wow! Yet another reason we give thanks for our incredible supporters. 🙌 🙌
