Muxes are men who consider themselves women and live in sanctioned limbo

Your Tuesday afternoon short film: MUXES, by Ivan Olita, shot in indigenous Mexican communities around the town of Juchitán, where "the world is not divided simply into males and females. The local Zapotec people have made room for a third category, which they call muxes—men who consider themselves women and live in a socially sanctioned limbo between the two genders."

As National Geographic notes, "Local acceptance of this mixed gender is rooted in ancient culture and can be traced back to the cross-dressing priests and hermaphrodite gods of Aztec and Maya civilizations."
